Monitoring report of old growth forests changes in the Ukrainian Carpathians for November 2022

In November, our experts continued monitoring old growth forests based on Landsat-8 and Sentinel-1 satellite images. The compositions of Landsat-8 optical images were unsuitable for monitoring due to heavy cloud cover.

Еxperts continued monitoring old growth forests based on Sentinel-1 satellite radar images. These images are weather independent and able to penetrate clouds. These are the compositions of images. Even though images are able to penetrate cloud cover, it is not possible to accurately calculate vegetation indices on the basis of these images. Therefore, experts conducted a visual analysis of the areas for the loss of forest cover (fig. 2)

Experts identified 1,099 sites with an area of 12,120.1 hectares, which is 70.1% of the total number of accepted primeval forests for monitoring.

Monitoring is carried out by visual analysis with accuracy determined by the  resolution of radar imagery.Selective cuttings of low intensity cannot be determined due to the limitations of radar imagery. Based on the analysis, no violations of the forest cover were detected in the inspected areas.

*Old growth forests - its definition, as it is introduced in the Law of Ukraine, includes three categories: virgin, quasi-virgin, and natural forests - https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/2063-19/conv#Text
