From Illegal Logging to Murder: Verdict Reached for "Black Loggers" in Sumy Region

The Shostka District Prosecutor's Office has secured a conviction for two residents of the Sumy region who murdered their accomplice to conceal illegal logging activities. This case marks a grim milestone: it is the first court ruling in Ukraine where "black loggers" have been documented resorting to premeditated murder to protect their illicit operations.

The events that led to this tragedy occurred on March 27, 2021, in the city of Shostka. Three local men involved in the illegal harvesting and transportation of timber took an acquaintance – who was also a suspect in a criminal case regarding illegal logging – to the outskirts of the village of Moskovske.

The meeting was intended to "settle a conflict." The perpetrators were attempting to coerce their associate into refusing to cooperate with law enforcement and withholding information about their illegal timber schemes.

When the attempt at persuasion failed, the 37-year-old defendant retrieved an axe from a car trunk and struck the victim three times. The man died instantly at the scene. To evade justice, the accomplices buried the body in a forest belt. The search for the missing man continued for nearly a month before law enforcement authorities managed to track down the suspects.

Court Verdict and Legal Classification

The court found the men guilty under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

• Premeditated murder committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy to conceal another crime (Art. 115, part 2).

• Illegal logging and transportation of timber resulting in serious consequences (Art. 246, part 4).

According to the court’s decision, the 37-year-old perpetrator was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while his 43-year-old accomplice received 10 years. Notably, the older convict only partially admitted his guilt, agreeing with the facts of the case but denying the intent to kill, whereas the primary perpetrator did not admit guilt at all. Case materials regarding a third participant have been separated into a different proceeding.

Illegal logging is not merely a matter of environmental damage or the theft of state resources; it leads to the radical criminalization of society. As this case demonstrates, these activities can escalate to the most heinous crimes against human life.
