Practical EUDR Training Guide Now Freely Available
A practical training guide on the EUDR for Ukrainian furniture and woodworking companies is now available for free download.
The EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation) is a new European Union regulation aimed at combating deforestation and forest ecosystem degradation. It requires companies to guarantee that products made from wood, cocoa, coffee, soy, palm oil, cattle, or rubber have not contributed to deforestation or forest degradation after December 31, 2020.
While Ukraine is not an EU member and the regulation does not apply as Ukrainian law, it will directly affect Ukrainian companies exporting wood and wood products to Europe.
Therefore, this guide will help businesses understand the requirements of the #EUDR, assess risks, and prepare for exporting to the EU. The guide contains clickable links to essential documents and information, as well as recordings and presentations from the "EUDR-Ready" training program (11 educational workshops for furniture and woodworking companies). Within the document, you will find a comparison of key aspects of the EUTR and EUDR, a checklist for EUDR readiness, information on mitigating risks associated with sanitary logging and other non-compliances, and common mistakes made by Ukrainian exporters.
The "EUDR-Ready" guide was presented during the SMART EXPORT 6.0 conference in Kyiv, organized by the Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers. The event brought together manufacturers, experts, exporters, and all those systematically building their path to international markets. Dmytro Karabchuk, founder of NGO ForestCom and coordinator of forestry projects, explained the new European sustainability standard, how to meet its requirements, and avoid export disruptions due to lack of preparation. The speaker emphasized that this work is "important for the development of responsible business practices and sustainable forest management in Ukraine and across the European continent."
The conference participants also discussed key factors determining success in foreign markets:
- Real opportunities and growth points in European markets.
- How to prepare for the new EUDR standards and prevent export pauses.
- Why an export strategy is not a formality but a foundation for scaling.
- How to properly launch a brand in foreign markets to avoid the trap of "selling what we have."
- Valuable case studies from Ukrainian furniture companies, including mistakes, initial results, lessons learned, and honest stories about their journeys.
The guide to adapting the furniture and woodworking industries to the new EU requirements was prepared as part of the EUDR implementation education program. The project is implemented by the Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers in cooperation with leading experts from FSC Ukraine, PEFC Ukraine (National Forest Voluntary Certification System), ForestCom (Forest Initiatives and Community), SE Ukrderzhlisproekt, and NGO "Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group - UNCG."
The Swiss Import Promotion Program (SIPPO) supports this training course, providing participants with access to expert knowledge and practical solutions for complying with the new EU requirements. SIPPO is commissioned by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) as part of its economic development cooperation.
