Monitoring report of ancient plantations in the Ukrainian Carpathians for October 2022.
In October, experts of the ForestCom NGO continued the monitoring of ancient plantations in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Sentinel satellite images and Landsat-8 images were used for the analysis.

A total of 12 Landsat-8 images were used to calculate the normalized vegetation index NDVI. For this, a program was written in Java Script. The computed image was exported to QGIS to calculate statistics for each plot.

For each area of the ancient plantation, using the "Zonal statistics" module in QGIS, an index that is repeated most often (majority) is determined. Areas with low index values up to 0.3 were visually inspected. The reasons for such a low index value were patches of residual cloudiness, not loss of tree cover.
For monitoring, 1,099 plots with an area of 12,120.1 hectares have been determined, which is 70.1% of the total number of accepted primeval forests. As a result of the analysis, no changes in the territory of ancient plantations were found.
